(if my pictures turn out you will see Roy in the middle of one such crossing). b) we lost about 40 minutes after missing a junction. 2. poor trail choice you came down that trail? Geezus! Was it dry? our plan escape plan ultimately worked, and in retrospect we should have had more confidence in it. we were both mildly hypothermic, and the tip of a finger of mine is still numb from incipient frostbite. Roy was the cool coper, so roped they call him mr. roper. --- northseabubbleboy wrote: > Hey Brian, > Roy started telling me about the hike, he mentioned > you were putting together a thorough trip report. Once we got past the nasty, wet, off-canter slab with the fist-sized crack on the side (above the ladders), we could only go up to escape. That certainly contributed to my "bowel-shaking earthquakes of doubt and remorse." I wish I took some pictures of that ankle-deep snow we encountered around the Jefferson summit cone. That said, Brian did a great job of getting us headed the right way from the top of Adams, and making sure we made the most use of the remaining daylight. The integral compass in my altimeter watch did yeoman duty, but in the future I will have my regular compass more handy. And my goggles as well: to my chagrin, Bolle did not design those cycling glasses to keep the eyes from freezing shut. Dave: you have balls of granite to have descended Six Husbands with an external frame pack. And a lost-in-action list for the trip, for the record, and for the purposes of procrastinating on my law studies: 1) one and 2/3 Black Diamond trekking poles 2) one Outdoor Research Gortex overmitt 3) ~12 oz. gorp 4) one firestarting kit comprising a tealight candle and some dryer lint 5) most crucially, Brian's fine crafted maple walking staff, left behind to appease the mountain gods Hopefully the tip of Brian's ring finger will remain off the list. Audi, Mr. Roper P.S. I've ordered Tyvek sets of the maps, to prevent "relic" syndrome. ---- From: "Roy Roberts" To: "Brian McKenzie" Subject: Jefferson, Adams, Madison Date: Sunday, October 27, 2002 9:46 PM Hey Brian, I hope you're getting some feeling back in that fingertip. I spoke with someone at Huberts on Saturday and it appears that my boots are on their way to Osolo or wherever. My photos and our Tyvek maps should arrive here next week sometime, so I'll send them to you along with some beer. Alexsis and I just bottled up five gallons of porter, mmmmmm. A table at the bottom of this web page gives "book time" for the three northern Presi peaks as 9:45 for the easiest way. *Not* Six Husbands, but Jefferson loop. http://home.earthlink.net/~ellozy/npresi.html We must properly finish that route sometime. Impressive list of equipment left on the mountain, you may have to send in a separate expedition to do equipment recovery. cheers dave :) ---- From: "Roy Roberts" To: "Brian McKenzie" Cc: "Dave Kharas" ; "Rama Roberts" Subject: if only Date: Sunday, November 03, 2002 10:06 PM Hey Brian - check out picture #2 on Dave's hiking page http://home.earthlink.net/~dkharas/dkgal1.html There is some dude peacefully reclining in the sunshine on a snowy rock on Mt. Adams, with Mt. Jefferson in the background. Yeah, that could have been one of us, when the S&R found us as corpsicles the next morning! Dave's page has some nice shots of out Lafayette trip as well. Maybe next Halloween I'll get a wooden-shafted ice axe and go as the remains of George Mallory. Dave, can I borrow your crampons? ---- From: "Brian McKenzie" To: "Roy Roberts" ; "Roy Roberts" Subject: FEAR and DETERMINATION Date: Monday, November 04, 2002 9:44 AM Roy, I got 11 NICE pictures of our trip. They are grainy, but that reflects the ruggedneess of our trip. There is one particular one of you coming up a snowy scrambly bit that is GRIM. There are two pictures from the morning that, when contrasted with the later pics, illustrate dramatic weather changes. Two brook crossing pictures are also good. I will get these in the mail either today or tomorrow, and I will also scan and email some tomorrow as well.
