Our Route

Our actual route is in yellow, the planned sections (not completed) in orange. The low mileage deceived us in our planning. The elevation gain (particularly the tough climbing up the near-vertical wet rocks of the Six Husbands) plus crossings of swollen brooks took a lot of time.

We left the car as shown on Friday night and hiked in to the Osgood tentsite. Brian brought the white gas and I had the stove, but I stupidly forgot to bring a fuel pump for my stove - a bad omen. The next morning we confidently started rather late, perhaps 9:30 or 10:00, and promptly got a little lost due to bad trail markings between Osgood Cutoff and the Great Gulf Trail - this resulted in lost time with unplanned water crosssings and bushwhacking.

About seven hours later, we ended up bushwhacking our retreat down from the top of Mt. Adams in a whiteout to recover the Buttress Trail in the last few minutes of daylight. The hike back to our tent comprised three hours of wet misery with headlamps. We promptly sunk into our sleeping bags. The next morning we hiked back to the car, glad to be alive.
